(17) Florida Gators at (3) Georgia Bulldogs

Florida (5-2):

I can tell when a football team isn’t accustomed to winning games, and that’s been this group in a nutshell. I had to pay closer attention to them after their Week 4 victory over the Ole Miss Rebels. Wins like that can serve as confidence boosters moving forward, but the problem I had with them was the same issue Ole Miss experienced when they entered the following week: celebrating the previous week’s victory for too long. I’ve alluded to this a few times since it happened, but Florida did EXACTLY what Ole Miss did. The week after their win against the Rebels, they traveled to Missouri and got beaten down by the Tigers. They didn’t even look like they showed up. A week after suffering their first loss, they got punched in the mouth by South Carolina, only to turn around and travel to Austin, where they upset the Texas Longhorns in Week 7. If Florida had only one loss, this would be the kind of resume the committee would love, especially with victories over the Ole Miss Rebels and Texas Longhorns in the same season! The Florida Gators have had an interesting season. They’ve shown flashes of what they can be, but they’re still working through some growing pains under a new head coach. They’ve been one of the best teams in the nation when it comes to running the football, with Jadan Baugh emerging as the engine of their offensive attack. Today, they resume their rivalry with the Dawgs in Atlanta.

Georgia (6-1):

I was impressed with them after the road victory against Alabama because, although it wasn’t their best-looking performance, they made key plays, converted when necessary, moved the chains, kept the offense on schedule, and got a strong performance from the defense. Most importantly, Gunner Stockton made key throws when the team needed them. That victory also propelled Georgia to the No. 1 ranking in the polls heading into the following week. Then came the shocker: a huge upset at the hands of the Auburn Tigers. What hurt Georgia in that game was the turnovers. When you don’t take care of the football, you don’t win games. Plain and simple. I also noticed that they struggled to stop Auburn’s rushing attack and had a difficult time containing Byrum Brown. It didn’t help that the offense disappeared for two quarters, either. That game happened, and all you can do now is learn from it and move forward. However, I will say that the Auburn game exposed some weaknesses that stronger competition will attempt to exploit. I still believe this group can make another run come playoff time. In a wild SEC this year, I still consider Georgia the best team in the conference, and I see them winning another conference championship. But what about playoff wins? This group hasn’t won a playoff game since its last championship victory over TCU in 2023. The bye week has come and gone, and Georgia returns to the field today for a conference showdown with the Gators.

Florida X-Factor: LJ McCray

LJ could be a game-changer for the Florida defense today. In many of Georgia’s games this year, I’ve noticed one thing: Gunner Stockton has had too much time to throw from the pocket. What I’ll be watching today is how LJ looks to attack this Georgia offensive line! At 6’6″, he’s a physically gifted defensive lineman with the length and athleticism to cause problems for anyone attempting to block him. LJ can generate pressure from the interior, attack off the edge, and hold his own against the run. He has the physical tools to become a major defensive star in the SEC.

Georgia X-Factor: Nate Frazier

One staple of Georgia Bulldogs football is running the ball, and Nate is a key piece of the puzzle for this offense. When he’s healthy and on the field, he’s a difference-maker, and this becomes a much more balanced offense with him in the backfield. Nate is a physical and explosive runner with a combination of acceleration through the running lanes, excellent burst when he sees an opening, a low center of gravity, and, of course, breakaway speed when he gets into the open field. If Nate can average at least four to five yards per carry, that will open things up even further for Gunner Stockton and the passing attack.

Final Thoughts:

It’s another edition of the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party,” and this time, the game will be played in Atlanta, which means it’s essentially a home game for Georgia. Florida is looking to keep its momentum going and add another victory over an upper-echelon SEC opponent. The last time we saw Georgia, they entered Week 7 as the No. 1-ranked team in the country, only to fall short against the Auburn Tigers in what was arguably the most shocking loss of the season. This should be a collision course! In their victory against the Texas Longhorns, Florida’s defense showed signs of improvement. I know Georgia will present a challenge today, but the Gators must keep that defensive momentum going. Next, they must slow down Georgia’s rushing attack, and containing this unit will require consistency from the defensive front and linebackers playing in space. They can’t afford to allow Georgia to generate significant gains early in the game. The final key is putting pressure on Gunner Stockton. This is a rivalry game, and one thing you always hear Kirby Smart emphasize is the importance of keeping his players disciplined. If things get out of hand late, the team that maintains its composure and discipline could ultimately win this game. For Georgia, I need to see them create opportunities with the tight ends, especially if Florida decides to load the box to stop the ground attack. They also need to win on first down. Georgia has to keep Florida out of third-and-short situations and, more importantly, put the Gators in third-and-long situations where the defense can anticipate the pass. These matchups always find a way to entertain!

Prediction:

Georgia 38, Florida 24
