1. Alabama Crimson Tide– Nothing’s changed one bit. Matt Corral did put up 21 points on this defense, but they were still able to handle and take care of business to remain undefeated. I’m really liking what I’m seeing from Bryce Young. Look at all the quarterbacks Nick Saban has had over the years. Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones and now, we can add Bryce to this list. This team will not be challenged until the SEC title game in December when they play a certain team who’s also been dominating so far on the young season. Tonight, they’ll be in College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies.
2. Georgia Bulldogs– They’ve outscored their last two opponents 99-0. You read that correctly. Look how dominant they were against Vanderbilt (which isn’t difficult to do) and they simply punched Arkansas in the mouth en route to a 37-0 win. As I told Israel Rivera last night on College Football Showdown, this defense simply has no weakness. The defensive line is strong, the linebackers can play downhill and cover from sideline to sideline and the secondary locks everything down. I was expecting Georgia to be good this year, but never this strong. Even I didn’t see this coming.
3. Penn State Nittany Lions– James Franklin kept them focused on what’s in front of them at home against Indiana. With a big game looming, it’s a common thing for teams to get overlook who’s in front of them and look ahead to the up and coming game. This offense does just enough to move the ball down the field and the defense handles the rest. The last time Penn State lost a football game was last season to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Guess who they play today? I can’t wait for this game.
4. Iowa Hawkeyes– This is hands down the best defensive team in the Big Ten. They’ve also been the best defense I’ve seen behind of course, the Georgia Bulldogs. Look at what they did against Maryland last week. They forced six turnovers. That was the only game because they’ve been doing this all year long. Their defense thrives on the takeaway. Offensively, Spencer Petras is doing just enough to keep the Hawkeyes in football games. Their biggest game in recent memory takes place today. They host the Penn State Nittany Lions this afternoon.
5. Cincinnati Bearcats– I think many of you knew they’d be here. What a win last weekend in South Bend. They were able to start early and never looked back. This was a huge win to let people know they deserve to be considered amongst the elite and potentially be considered for the College Football Playoff. Last night, they handled their business against the Temple Owls. It will be interesting to see what else they do moving forward. A win against a then-ninth ranked Notre Dame looks great on the resume.
