The minute Jamal Adams was traded, I was excited for him. For the first few years of his career, he was a great player on down teams in East Rutherford with the New York Jets. There were many teams I felt who could’ve benefitted from the services of this safety. The Seattle Seahawks chimed in on him and traded some first round picks along with a third-round pick to acquire Jamal. In the off-season, both sides were negotiating on a new deal. Jamal had reported to training camp on time but wasn’t participating in practice. The stalemate can end now. The Seahawks have decided to extend the safety. It’s a four-year extension worth $72 million which indeed makes him the highest paid safety in the league.
Jamal is a top three safety in this game. That’s without question. It’s the contagious energy he displays on a weekly basis. When you play with guys who have those high energy levels, it motivates you to be better. Jamal was meant to play football. He’s a physical force who will let it be known. Let’s talk about that. The physical nature he brings to the table. He has no problem getting his jersey dirty or putting his face in the pile to make that play. Referring to him as a Swiss army knife is so accurate. Jamal can play back in coverage and patrol the middle, he can play in the box as if he were a linebacker, he finds himself always around the football as that magnetic force, but what stands out to me when I watch him play is his ability to rush the passer. Secondary blitzes are already tough to defend because they’re the fastest guys on the field. Jamal has that speed to get where he wants and closes in perfectly. When you watch the film on him, that’s all you see is number 33 flying around the field. His motor truly never stops, and you can’t help but respect a guy like that.
I’m glad to see this got resolved. Jamal was the top performer on an underachieving Seahawks defense in 2020. Without him, they would crumble severely. Last season, he was the team leader in sacks with 9.5. With Seattle getting this deal done, this eliminates any type of distractions heading into the regular season. Jamal now becomes the third highest paid player on the team with Russell Wilson first making $35 million a year and Bobby Wagner making $18 million a year.
