“About Cam Time”

Cam Newton was a star in college. He put together one of the best seasons I saw from a college quarterback in 2010. Each week when you saw the highlights of the Auburn Tigers, he had something to do with it. That same year, he won the Heisman. A few weeks later, he led Auburn to a national title. In 2011, he was the number one overall pick by the Carolina Panthers. For nine years, Cam gave the fans everything he could. Then in March, he was released by the team. For months, we have been wondering where he’d end up. He has been signed by the New England Patriots.

When Cam puts it all together, he’s shown the potential to be one of the best playing the position. One thing I can say about him is he is the best escape artist for a man his size. This is someone who’s 6’5 and 245 pounds. What I just listed is the size of some defensive players and here he is playing quarterback. When you think you have him down, he’s found a way to get out the sack and extend the play with his feet. He plays the game with the exuberance of a kid in the backyard. You also notice his swagger. For years, I saw the Carolina Panthers feed off the energy he provided. If you don’t contain him or get to him early on, he will make a big play that can change everything in the game. He’s that dynamic of a player.

Finally, someone signed him. I just wonder if he can abide by the Patriot way. I say this because when you become a member of the New England Patriots, you put the team first. It’s not about personal accomplishments, egos, stats or finances. But I won’t doubt it yet because Bill has a way of working his magic with football players. Look at what he did with Randy Moss all those years ago. Let’s see how this works out.
