“Like Father, Like Son”

The San Francisco 49ers didn’t know what direction they were headed in it seemed. Each year under Jim Harbaugh, they made the playoffs. Also, they were in the NFC Championship in those first seasons. After hiring Chip Kelly in 2016, the franchise decided to hire Kyle Shanahan in 2017. The first two seasons under Kyle were rough. In the first season, the Niners won six games. In 2018, Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL. The 49ers struggled again going 4-12. 2019 was by far his best year. The 49ers went 13-3, clinched the NFC West for the first time since 2012 and represented the NFC in the Super Bowl. Today, he’s being rewarded. The 49ers have signed Kyle to a contract extension through 2025.

I can sit here and say if Jimmy doesn’t go down in 2018, the 49ers are a playoff team. Younger coaches nowadays are in. Kyle is only 40 years old. I noticed how much his players appreciate him. He encourages his guys to leave it all on the field, but most importantly, he always makes sure to tell his guys to have fun. Kyle has also become one of the best offensive minded coaches in the league. He’s innovative in drawing up different offensive looks. This is a coach who wants to run the football down a defenses throat. If you looked at the 49ers offense last season, they weren’t necessarily overflowing with weapons.  It’s all about how you scheme with the group of men you have around you. That is what separates exceptional coaches from the ordinary ones.

He’s the leader behind one of the biggest turnarounds in NFL history. Kyle joined the legend Tom Landry and former Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis as one of three head coaches to begin a season 8-0 after starting 0-8 a season before. He was by far a candidate for coach of the year for his efforts in ’19. Let’s see how the defending NFC champions pan in 2020 (if the season happens).
