Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans

Bills (2025 Record: 12-5):

I will be the first to say that there’s never such a thing as an “easy path” to a Super Bowl. This is a physical and grueling game that can take a lot out of you both mentally and physically. Now that I got that part out of the way, let me get to what I really want to say. Last season was their prime opportunity to make a playoff run and get to a Super Bowl, and here’s why I say that. The thorn in their side, the Kansas City Chiefs, struggled and didn’t even qualify for the postseason, while every other team in the AFC Playoffs lacked the experience this group had. Yet, their season still ended in the divisional round against the Denver Broncos. To be quite frank, I don’t think the Buffalo Bills will ever get another opportunity quite like the one they blew last season. During the offseason, they made several moves, the biggest being the firing of Sean McDermott, which honestly didn’t surprise me. I actually liked Sean as a coach, and I saw how respected he was within that locker room and organization, but the team clearly felt a change was needed. When I saw he was let go, there were two guys I hoped they would target. The first was Mike Tomlin after he stepped down from the Steelers, and the other was Klint Kubiak, who was the top coaching candidate on the market before eventually taking the Raiders job. Instead, the organization decided to promote from within and name Joe Brady their next head coach. This is the same guy who called plays for Joe Burrow during LSU’s National Championship run. For most of last season, I called this team out for not having a true No. 1 wide receiver, but they addressed that issue by acquiring D.J. Moore from the Chicago Bears. This Sunday, they open their season in Houston against the Texans.

Texans (2025 Record: 12-5):

The towel was practically thrown in on them after their 0-3 start last season. One thing I’ve noticed is that when a team struggles, either one side of the football is significantly stronger than the other or the entire operation is a mess altogether. That wasn’t the case with this team. The offense struggled to find rhythm and consistency, while the defense did everything possible to keep the team competitive. Speaking of that defense, it was one of the two best units in football during the 2025 season, and that’s a testament to DeMeco Ryans and his defensive background. Alongside Mike Macdonald, DeMeco is one of the best defensive minds in the game today. Once the Texans turned things around, they got hot and never looked back, finishing the regular season on a nine-game winning streak. They also secured the first road playoff victory in franchise history. I’ll be honest: I believed this team was talented enough not only to reach the AFC Championship last season, but possibly represent the conference in the Super Bowl. That defense was truly championship caliber. What will ultimately make or break this team this upcoming season is the offense and whether it can be efficient enough to complement that elite defense. I need to see C.J. Stroud continue to mature, Nico Collins stay healthy, and the running back tandem of David Montgomery and Woody Marks provide offensive balance. When everything is clicking on all cylinders, this is a tough group to beat and challenge. The Texans kick off the season with a showdown against the Bills on Sunday afternoon.

Bills X-Factor: Keon Coleman

I still think Keon can develop into a solid football player in this league. Now that the Bills have an offensive-minded head coach, look for Keon to potentially be unlocked this season. This Sunday, Buffalo faces a Houston defense built to pressure the quarterback first and foremost, so the game plan will naturally center around limiting what Josh Allen can do. Keon has the build and contested-catch ability to attack Houston’s man-to-man coverage and if he’s able to turn short-yardage passes into chunk plays, it could significantly benefit the Bills offense.

Texans X-Factor: Woody Marks

When Joe Mixon missed all of last season, Woody Marks stepped up and became a reliable option out of the backfield. As I mentioned earlier, the Texans need a heavy yet consistent dose of both Montgomery and Marks to keep this offense balanced. Buffalo’s defense is aggressive and will prioritize pressuring Stroud, limiting explosive plays to Nico Collins, and forcing Houston into becoming one-dimensional. Woody is the counter to all three. If he can be productive, he’ll help keep Stroud out of long-yardage situations and allow the offense to stay on schedule.

Final Thoughts:

This is an exciting way to open the new NFL season! Sunday will mark the third consecutive meeting between the Bills and Texans in Houston. The city of Houston has become a horror place for Buffalo and this dates back to the 2019 Wild Card round when the Texans came back to beat the Bills. Back in 2024, Josh Allen had arguably the worst game of his career against this Texans defense completing only 9 of his 30 pass attempts, and just last season on Thursday Night Football, Houston sacked him eight times — yes, eight. What made the 2025 meeting even more impressive was the fact they were sometimes able to generate pressure while only rushing three defenders, keeping that spy in the middle to mirror Josh and play coverage across the board in the secondary. I can’t stress this enough when it comes to the Bills: the game will start and end with James Cook. When he’s productive, not only does it alleviate pressure from 17, but the offense as a whole operates more efficiently. A strong running game would also force Houston to load the box, creating opportunities for Josh to take shots downfield. On the Houston side, the biggest question is which version of their offense will show up. To me, that’s the biggest variable not just in this matchup, but for the entire season. Ultimately, I believe this game will come down to which quarterback is protected more consistently and which defense can generate the most pressure along with which Quarterback will take better care of the football. This feels like a grind-it-out game that will come down to the fourth quarter.
