Campus Clash

(17) Alabama Crimson Tide at (5) Georgia Bulldogs

Alabama (2–1):

It’s time to admit they aren’t what they were for over a decade. This was a team that was consistently ranked in the top three in the polls. They weren’t just favorites to win the SEC West or reach the SEC title game—they were expected to win both and take home the National Championship. Believe it or not, this program actually struggled early on under Nick Saban. But we all know how that turned out. They truly shocked me in Week 1 when they played the Florida State Seminoles. Entering that game as the No. 8 team in the country, they got punched in the mouth. One consistent weakness this team has had—even dating back to the early Saban days—is defending mobile quarterbacks. Since that loss, the Crimson Tide have handled their business, winning their next two games against LA-Monroe and Wisconsin. One thing I mentioned before the season started is that this is year two under Kalen DeBoer. Now he can focus solely on coaching this team, rather than trying to live up to the legacy of the greatest to ever do it. I’m sure Nick Saban has told him to just be himself. I like Kalen, and all he needs is time to learn his way through the SEC. Let’s give him that time to adjust. This Saturday night, Alabama will face a familiar opponent—this time on the road in Athens for a primetime showdown.

Georgia (3–0):

The last time they played, Georgia escaped with an overtime win in Knoxville against the Tennessee Volunteers, who gave them all they could handle. Early on, it looked grim, as the Vols put up 21 points on what’s arguably the best defense in college football today. However, one thing I always say in games like that is: when you face a team like Georgia, you must close the door on them. If you don’t—or even leave it slightly cracked—they’ll make you pay. When you have them down, keep them down, or the victory will slip away. The verdict is still out on Gunner Stockton, but for that game to be his first true road start, he looked sharp—completing 23 of 31 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns. Plus, he showed he can impact the game as a runner when needed. So far this year, we’ve heard a lot about Ohio State—and rightfully so, as they’re the defending champs—along with Penn State, LSU, Miami, and even Texas (who hasn’t always looked their best). But let’s not forget about the Georgia Bulldogs. They’re still one of the best teams in the sport. This offense isn’t flashy or overpowering, but it’s efficient and knows how to capitalize on opportunities. And the defense? They’ll let you think you have a chance—then punch you in the mouth and take over. Kirby Smart has built an absolute machine in Athens. This Saturday, they welcome their old nemesis to town.

Alabama X-Factor: Jam Miller

He’s missed the last two games with a collarbone injury, but he’s expected to return for this high-stakes SEC clash. Jam is a crucial piece of this Alabama offense. He only needs a small crease to burst through the lane. But he’s not just a runner—he’s a true Swiss Army knife. He’s a key piece in pass protection, willing to lower his shoulder and get physical. He’s also versatile enough to catch passes out of the backfield, adding another layer for defenses to account for. His presence opens up the Tide offense in multiple ways.

Georgia X-Factor: Christen Miller

Georgia’s defense always features playmakers, and Christen Miller is one of them. I love the energy he brings in the trenches. He reminds me a lot of Leonard Williams with his interior strength and explosiveness. Miller has the ability—and the opportunity—to make a major impact, especially up front. If he can win his matchups, clog   running lanes, and collapse Ty Simpson’s pocket, Georgia will have a huge advantage.

Final Thoughts:

I’ll never get tired of previewing this matchup. There have been so many memorable battles: the 2018 National Title game in Atlanta when Jalen Hurts was benched for Tua Tagovailoa; the SEC title game 11 months later when Jalen came in for Tua; the 2021–22 National Title game when Georgia finally got over the hump; and even last season, when Alabama looked to be pulling away but Georgia clawed back, only to fall just short—giving Kalen DeBoer his signature win. Now, they meet again—this time in Athens. Keys to the Game: For Alabama, winning the trenches will be crucial on both sides. The offensive line must protect Ty Simpson, and the defensive front needs to disrupt Georgia’s run game. Tim Keenan III will return for the Tide, giving their defense a much-needed boost. They must also establish the run game early to make Georgia respect it—which could open up play action and downfield shots. Lastly, they need to limit turnovers and mistakes. Georgia’s defense will make you pay for every error, so ball security is essential. For Georgia, stick to your identity: run the football, control the tempo, rely on fundamentals, and let the run game set up play action for Stockton. Can they force Alabama into obvious passing situations? If so, that plays into Georgia’s hands. This will be a fun one. As with so many of their recent battles, it’ll come down to the fourth quarter.

Prediction:

Georgia 31, Alabama 24
